What’s the competition all about?

Compete for the title of Champagne Sommelier of the Year 2025 and win fantastic prizes, including an exclusive visit to Joseph Perrier in Châlons-en-Champagne.

The theme of this first edition is ‘Effervescence: the magic of bubbles and fizz’. Participants will be challenged with themed questions, a short presentation, and a test of sommelier skills. Impress the jury with your champagne expertise and creativity.

  • In the registration form, you will be asked to answer several questions and share your knowledge on the specific champagne theme in a multimedia format. This can include text, video, audio, and/or photography.
  • In the final round, you will present your insights in a concise and engaging presentation, further exploring the theme. The jury may also ask follow-up questions. You can present in either Dutch or English.
  • Finally, you will provide a well-thought-out food and champagne pairing based on a given menu. You’ll have the opportunity to explain your choices while serving the selected champagne.

The jury of the Prix Joseph Perrier 2025

The winner is chosen by the three-member jury. These members have an excellent track record in terms of knowledge and experience of champagne and sommelier craftsmanship. The chairman of the jury is Frank Jacobs, wine journalist and former tasting teacher at the Wijnacademie. The other jury members are Anja Vondenhoff, Weinakademiker and Champagne Ambassador and Heleen Boom, co-owner and sommelier Restaurant Bouwkunde and chairman of the Dutch Guild of Sommeliers.

Who can participate?

The competition is open to sommeliers who:

  • Work at least 24 hours per week in the Dutch hospitality industry.
  • Speak Dutch or English.
  • Are 18 years or older.

Competition timeline

  • March 31, 2025: deadline for registration and submission of your personal dossier.
  • April 14, 2025: announcement of the finalists.
  • May 12, 2025: the grand final with three selected candidates.

Regulations Prix Joseph Perrier Champagne 2025

Article 1: The competition
1.1 The Prix Joseph Perrier champagne sommelier competition is organized by Brouzje in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
1.2 The purpose of this competition is to appreciate and recognize the knowledge and experience of sommeliers with regard to champagne.
1.3 The competition has a predetermined champagne theme and consists of several parts;
– the sommelier shares knowledge about the specific champagne theme in a multimedia way (in text, video images, sound and/or photos)
– the sommelier can give a short presentation about the specific champagne theme
– the sommelier uses the champagne experience with wine-food advice during a presentation
1.4 The final takes place at a location in the Netherlands.

Article 2: Conditions for participation
2.1 The competition is reserved for sommeliers who work at least 24 hours a week in Dutch gastronomy and are at least 18 years old.
2.2 Each candidate must be available on the competition date mentioned below.
2.3 Each candidate respects the outcome and will respectfully display the title.
2.4 The candidate does not harm the reputation of Joseph Perrier, Brouzje, champagne and/or the jury members.
2.5 Persons who have previously won the title or have been a jury member are excluded from participating in the competition.
2.6 Any false statement, identity or address details will result in immediate elimination from the competition and – if applicable – the return of any prizes already obtained.

Article 3: Registration
3.1 This competition is free and does not include any purchase obligation.
3.2 Registration is via the website brouzje.nl/en-prix-joseph-perrier.
3.3 The obligations of the file to be sent are stated on the aforementioned website.
3.4 The participant must have submitted the fully completed file digitally before the end date stated below.

Article 4: Selection of final candidates
4.1 The selection will be made exclusively on the basis of the complete files received.
4.2 The selection will be made by the jury chairman, representative of Joseph Perrier and representative of Brouzje.
4.3 A maximum of 3 candidates will be selected for the final.

Article 5: Final
5.1 The sommelier gives a short presentation of approximately 5 minutes on the predetermined champagne theme of the competition. Followed by any questions from the jury.
5.2 The sommelier gives wine-food advice based on a menu and knows how to explain this while serving the wine in question.
5.3 This final part lasts a maximum of 30 minutes in total per participant.
5.4 After the event, the jury selects the winner, second and third place and announces them immediately.
5.5 The jury reserves the right not to award a place if there is reason to do so.

Article 6: Jury
6.1 The jury consists of a jury chairman and two jury members.
6.2 All jury members have sound knowledge and experience of champagne and/or sommelier craftsmanship.
6.2 The organization is in the hands of Brouzje and Joseph Perrier. They are not part of the jury and are present at the final.
6.3 There is no appeal against the decisions of the jury.

Article 7: Official competition language
7.1 The competition form is available in Dutch and English. The file must be submitted in Dutch or English.
7.2 The final is also in Dutch or English.

Article 8: Competition theme and dates
8.1 Competition theme 2025: Effervescence, the magic of bubbles and fizz.
8.2 Start of registrations: January 27, 2025.
8.3 Submission of file: January 27 to March 31, 2025.
8.4 Selection of final candidates: April 1 to April 13, 2025
8.5 Announcement of final candidates: April 14, 2025
8.6 Final: May 12, 2025

Article 9: Prizes
9.1 The winner will receive the title of Prix Joseph Perrier, Champagne Sommelier 2025.
9.2 The winner will receive the certificate with the title, the winner’s trophy and the top cuvée champagne Joséphine by Joseph Perrier.
9.3 The winner will receive a stay of 1 night for 2 people, a visit and extensive tasting at Joseph Perrier and dinner.
9.4 The candidate in second place will receive a magnum bottle of Cuvée Royale Brut Nature by Joseph Perrier and 6 champagne glasses Lallemant x Joseph Perrier.
9.5 The candidate in third place will receive a lieu-dit cuvée Cote à Bras by Joseph Perrier.
9.6 The prizes cannot be contested by the winners and the value will not be paid out in cash.
9.7 Prizes are non-transferable and cannot be replaced or exchanged.

Article 10: Force Majeure
10.1 The organization is not responsible if the competition is changed, shortened, postponed or cancelled due to a case of force majeure or beyond their control.
10.2 The organization declines all responsibility if the website is not accessible during the competition or if the information provided by participants is destroyed due to a cause beyond its control.
10.3 The organization reserves the right in all cases to extend the period of participation and to postpone any announced date or to cancel the competition.
10.4 The organization reserves the right to change the regulations.

Article 11: Acceptance of the rules
11.1 By participating in the competition, one declares unconditional agreement with the entire rules, which apply as a contract.
11.2 The rules can be consulted on the Brouzje website for the entire duration of the competition.
11.3 These rules and this champagne sommelier competition are the property of Brouzje.

Article 12: Law
12.1 This competition and the interpretation of the rules are subject to Dutch law.
12.2 All possible disputes will be submitted to the competent courts.

Article 13: Data processing and media
13.1 During the competition, images and sound recordings may be made for publicity purposes.
13.2 Participants agree that images and sound may be used and made public for publicity purposes.
13.3 Participants authorize the organization to publish their name, the prizes won, the media material that has been made, on the website, social media and/or via the press, without this giving additional rights.
